George Washington Hartman
These are the life and times of George Washington Hartman.
He lived, and died in Jefferson Lake, Minnesota.
Why is his journal being reprinted here you ask? There were many significant, historical events that happened in 1941, and Hartman was so faithful about writing in his journal that we get to look over his shoulder and peer into the past.
Winston resident Joe Walker, Hartman’s great-great grandson, shares this week with us.

The first Umpqua Store was on the west side of the Umpqua River on George Shambrook's property. The first Post Office, known as Umpqua Ferry, was established March 16, 1877 in the Shambrook home with John C. Shambrook as the postmaster. Who operated the store? I do not know. The store was just north of the old county road that runs in front of Bill Murphy's house and a little to the east.

On March 20, the Sun was right over the Equator on the way to the northern hemisphere. On this date the Sun rises exactly in the East and travels through the sky for 12 hours and sets exactly in the West. This is the motion of the Sun through the sky for everyone on earth. Every place on earth experiences a 12 hour day twice a year on the Spring and Fall Equinox. This year the full moon and Good Friday share the same date March 21, and Easter Sunday, March 23, just three days after the Spring Equinox. I remember one other time in April when the Full Moon was on Good Friday. We had gone to the Good Friday Service and when we came out of church the moon was big and bright and a heavy frost had covered all the cars. A fruit grower always fears a heavy frost when the fruit trees are in full bloom. I don't remember if the fog had moved in to save that crop or not.

I realized that Easter was in March this year, but never looked to see how early. Even when Lent started I thought Easter was early. I know Easter is always the 1st Sunday after the 1st full moon after the Spring Equinox (which is March 20). The calendar I was using did not have the moon dates on it. Last week I found a 2008 calendar with all the holidays and moon dates. It was then I thought I am too late for a story for Palm Sunday. What To Do? I am still going to send a Palm Sunday Greeting, a St. Patrick Greeting, and an Easter Greeting all in one greeting as all are in Holy Week this coming week. I have told this Palm Sunday story many times. Meryl always liked for her Sunday school to do like the children were doing with Palm branches in the Sunday school lesson. John 12:12&13 - They heard Jesus was coming; they took branches from Palm trees and went to meet Him. We always gathered some tall ferns that grow along the creeks and roads to have for Palm Sunday. In Our Sunday School opening we had the Children spread a path with the ferns on the floor as they sang.

This Morning I want to tell you of the beauty that I enjoy along Melqua Road.
When I enter Melqua Road at the end of our driveway I turn south. When this road was named, they used the first three letters of Melrose and the last three letters of Umpqua. That made the name Melqua, for the road from Melrose to Umpqua.
