    Carving is not just what Huck Finn did on his front porch. The Umpqua Carvers showed what they were made of this last weekend. It turned out, that most of what they ‘were’ made of was a wood called bass wood, and a little Cyprus knee thrown in for good measure.

    Faith, sweat, and endurance….and the love of the game. Sutherlin Girls Basketball are the “BEST”. I did not have to be told that, I’ve know that since these girls were fourth and fifth graders.

    During last February’s Special Session of the Legislature, State Representative, Dennis Richardson (R-Central Point), interrupted his official duties in the Salem Capitol to make an oral presentation in behalf of a grant request for the proposed Oregon Fallen War Heroes Memorial. In response, the Oregon Parks & Recreation Commission has announced a grant of $64,187 toward construction of the Oregon Fallen War Heroes Memorial.

    Kick-off rally for Extension Service


    The Douglas County Friends of Extension are planning a rally on the courthouse steps Thursday, March 20, at 4:30 PM. The public is encouraged to att end and hear firsthand the message and facts regarding the state of Extension's future here.
    Following prominent guest speakers from the community, the 4-H groups from all around the county plan to lead a parade down Main Street in Roseburg.
    The proposed tax service measure which would save the Extension Service will appear on the May ballot as measure #10-86. Under the measure, a maximum rate of just six and one half cents (6 1/2) per $1,000. of ASSESSED value will preserve this service for future generations.
    The chart shows actual ANNUAL costs to homeowners.

    Book sale

    The Friends of the Library-Yoncalla branch-will hold a huge book sale on Saturday, March 22 beginning at 8 a.m.
    The sale will be held at the branch library on Main Street in Yoncalla.
    There will be a great variety of subjects: fiction, novels, mysteries, etc., hard backs and paper back, nonfiction on history, science, travel, biographies, etc. There will also be many children’s books.
    Many of the books have been donated over the past few years; however, most of the books are from the estate of Wilma Lacy who was a long time member of the Yoncalla Friends of the Library.

    Stretch and Tone at two locations

    Enroll in the Umpqua Community College Community Education class “Stretch and Tone.” The class will be on Mondays and Wednesday, April 1 through May 29, 8-9 a.m. at the Winston Community Center and also on Mondays and Wednesdays, April 7 thru June 11, 6-7 p.m., in Riddle at the Riddle Community Center. The class fee for either class is $68. Call 440-7744 to register and request course number 43043 in Winston or 43042 in Riddle.
    Learn a variety of exercise/ yoga routines which will enhance flexibility, improve balance, and tone your muscles. This class will help trim your waist, flatten your stomach, and firm your muscles from head to toe! Please bring a yoga mat; hand weights are optional. Good for all ages. Instructor: Sam Bessey

    Just wanted to let you know that some friends and I will be picking on SAT. April 5 from 7-10 PM at Murphy’s House of Brews in Roseburg. This is the first time that Murphy’s has scheduled music on a Sat. night so we hope folks come out to support it and make it a regular event. We might do a couple numbers off the new album.     Estate Sale

    The Yoncalla beautification project committee will hold an estate sale at the Yoncalla Community Center on Saturday, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    A wide variety of items will be off ered at the sale from the estate of Wilma Lacy, long time resident of Yoncalla.

    March Meeting of Mainly Mysteries book club

    The Mainly Mysteries Book Club will hold its next meeting on Thursday, March 13 at 5:30 pm at the Douglas County Headquarters Library. We will be discussing the mysteries of Deborah Crombie.
    The public is invited to join us in the Library Board Room for an hour of lively discussion and refreshments. No sign up is required.
    The April meeting will be on Thursday, April 10 at 5:30 in the Ford Community Room. We will be discussing mysteries featuring animal detectives.

    Practical Accounting Basics

    Enroll in the Umpqua Community College Community Education class “Practical Accounting Basics.” The class will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 1-May 29, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at South Umpqua High School, Room 5.     This non-credit class is an introduction to bookkeeping and accounting principles. The instructor holds bachelor’s degree in accounting and has worked in the field for more that 20 years. Please call 874-2102 for more information.
