    Scouting! How Sweet it is!

    Ed Gundy
Over the next several weeks you will be seeing boys in blue and tan shirts standing in front of stores, or knocking on your front door to sell a candy bar to you for only one dollar.

    George Washington Hartman
These are the life and times of George Washington Hartman. He lived, and died in Jefferson Lake, Minnesota.
Why is his journal being reprinted here you ask? There were many significant, historical events that happened in 1941, and Hartman was so faithful about writing in his journal that we get to look over his shoulder and peer into the past.
Winston resident Joe Walker, Hartman’s great-great grandson, shares this week with us.

    Diary of a Truck Driver

This winter has been a very cold winter in the Big Rig. Al Gore should be with me when I have to chain up... Global warming bah humbug!!
A little while ago I was traveling from Denver to Hermiston. Going across I 80 in Wyoming I saw 14 wrecks and spin outs. Then fair roads through Utah, Idaho but Oregon was a very different story.

This Morning I want to tell you of the beauty that I enjoy along Melqua Road.
When I enter Melqua Road at the end of our driveway I turn south. When this road was named, they used the first three letters of Melrose and the last three letters of Umpqua. That made the name Melqua, for the road from Melrose to Umpqua.

    Sez the Law: Comments

"Finders Keepers and Losers Weepers?" How much truth is there in this common saying? What do Oregon laws say regarding keeping lost and found money and goods?

    The St. Patrick's Day Parade

    From Tricia's Desk
My father was an Irish-Catholic born and raised in Protestant-controlled Belfast. I don’t remember him telling me any stories of how St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated there. I know that it is now a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland lasting at least 5 days long.
