    Americanism Essay Contest Winners


    Americanism Essay Contest Awards were recently presented to the winners at
    the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge meeting. Chairman Pete Pedersen gave out
    Certificates of Participation, trophies and savings bonds to the students from
    Coquille Valley Middle School and Myrtle Point Middle School.
    The Americanism Essay Contest is an annual program sponsored by Elks
    Lodges nation wide for 5th/6th graders and 7th/8th graders. This year’s theme
    was “What It Means To Me To Be an American.”
    Third place winner this year, receiving a certificate and trophy will be go to
    McKenzie Church, of Coquille Valley Middle School. McKenzie, who was
    unable to be there is the daughter of Steve and Kelly Church.
    Second place went to Cody Underwood, Coquille Valley Middle School, son of
    Sherry Underwood. Cody received a certificate and trophy.
    First place was won by Scarlet Celestino of Myrtle Point Middle School. Scarlet
    received a certificate, trophy and $50 savings bond from the local contest and
    then her essay was sent on to district where she also took first place and
    received a $100 savings bond.
    We congratulate all of the students who participated and the teachers who
    allowed them to write the essays.

    Coquille Lions Club buys new sound system


    Coquille High School’s Spike Leslie Field received a much needed new sound
    system thanks to the generosity of the Coquille Lion’s Club. Both the high
    school and the middle school will be able to use the system during their
    events. The Lions Club president, Curtis Jack, presented athletic director, Dan
    Cumberland, with a check during the recent twilight track meet. The amount of
    the donation is $3,379.29. Much of the funds came from Lion Burger sales at
    the Coos County Fair. Curtis said this project was one way to help the community
    that supports them. In addition, the club helps with eyeglasses and
    hearing aids. Anyone interested in finding out more about the Coquille Lions
    Club is invited to drop by their monthly meetings on the second Monday of
    every month at Mr. Zack’s at 6 p.m.
