August 5th (Tuesday) is the 25th annual National Night Out. The
Coquille Police Department and several community members are excited at
putting on this unique crime and drug prevention event in our area.
This event can offer a bridge between law enforcement and the
community. It also provides for a wonderful community spirit which I
would be excited to see grow for Coquille. During the pro police rally,
I had many people ask about doing another police support event during
the summer (hopefully without pouring rain!). I would invite those and
others who are interested to contact Officer Bryant and myself as we
are just in the planning stages for this awesome event.

If you haven't gotten your weeding done, do it now before any more
weeds seed your garden. Try not to use sprays whenever possible, as
they can injure bee and pollination populations. You might follow up
with a nice thick mulch, which will help keep weeds down, and retain
moisture. By now our soil should be warming up, and your garden seeds
can go out, whether vegetable or flower. In my garden, I'm just getting
started.

Some of my life's most fondest of memories was when I lived in Eugene
as a child, and trout fishing in the McKenzie River. I can close my
eyes and and still recall the sights, and especially the smells of some
of those days.
Let me set the stage for this journey back into time. The years were in the late 1930's and into the 1940's. The river in July and August were teeming with salmon.

All week I have been flooded with reports that the official
cause of the 2003 electrical blackout was not, as reported, untrimmed trees and
overheated transmission lines. The
largest blackout in US
history, more than 9,300 square miles, may have been caused by Chinese hackers
gaining access to networks controlling the electrical grid. US intelligence officials have advised the
Cyber Security Industry Alliance that forensic evidence suggests the PLA
(Peoples’ Liberation Army) was behind the blackout.
