Coos County District Attorney, Paul Frasier, announced that charges have been dropped in the case of the Coquille track coach, Wendy Boutiette, who was charged with sexual misconduct with a minor. A former Coquille High School student came forward in February of this year concerning a series of incidents involving Boutiette, which happened in the year 2006. Court proceedings and charges were dropped when former students declined to testify. Coos County Public Records obtained by The Sentinel record multiple incidents of misconduct ranging from inappropriate verbal exchanges with underage students by Boutiette to sexual encounters between Boutiette, her husband and another male, described as being eighteen years old at the time.¤

The case of the “Wrangler Bandit” is finally coming to a close. On October 20th, Coquille resident, Gwendolyn Sherbondy, appeared before U.S. District Judge Michael R. Hogan and pled guilty to the September 2009 bank robbery of the Wells Fargo Bank in Roseburg. Sherbondy also admitted to the October 2007 robbery of the Washington Mutual Bank in Myrtle Point and to the September 2008 robbery of the Washington Federal Savings and Loan in Lincoln City. Judge Hogan is scheduled to sentence Sherbondy on January 12th.

Only four days earlier, on October 16th, Sherbondy pled guilty to stealing over $10,000 from her daughter’s senior class after she was put in charge of managing the monies earned from the class’s fundraising efforts. Sentencing has been set in that case for November 9th at 8:30 a.m. Trail of Deception Last winter, Diann Gillaspie, the Superintendent of the Coquille School District, learned that Pepsi Cola Bottling and a nursery called Peoria Gardens had not been paid for products they had sold to the Class of 2009. The students were selling poinsettas and other items to pay for a post-graduation trip. Gillaspie attempted to resolve the issue with Sherbondy, who was in charge of collecting donations for the fundraising project, but no payments were ever made.
On February 10th, the Superintendent wrote Sherbondy a letter letting her know that if the vendors were not paid off by February 20th, that she would be filing a complaint with the Coquille Police Department. On the morning of February 24th, Sherbondy apparently decided to remedy the situation using a rather unorthodox method ... by walking into the Wells Fargo Bank in Roseburg, wearing a black beanie cap and a purple pullover sweatshirt, and sliding a note to one of the tellers demanding money. The teller complied by putting cash from a drawer on the counter. Sherbondy shoved the $7,992 into a brown purse and proceeded to leave the bank. Surveillance cameras inside the bank, an ATM camera at an adjoining bank and a security camera at a nearby restaurant recorded her image throughout the robbery, as well as her getaway in a green Jeep Wrangler.
Later that same day, Gillaspie received a fax from Sherbondy with a copy of two cashier‘s checks made out to the vendors. The Capture The FBI compiled surveillance photographs taken during the Roseburg bank heist and emailed them to news media to publicize the Bureau’s hunt for the “Wrangler Bandit.” Digital images were also sent to police departments in local communities to see if they recognized their suspect. Lt. Pat Smith of the Coquille Police Department recognized the suspect and the distinctive green Jeep Wrangler in the photographs, and on March 2nd contacted the FBI to say that he was 100 percent certain their photographs were of Coquille mom, Gwendolyn Sherbondy. Smith recognized Sherbondy because their children attended the same school and he had met her at various school activities and other events.

On March 5th, investigators searched the Sherbondy home and the green Jeep and turned up a black beanie-style cap and a pullover matching those worn by the “Wrangler Bandit.” Sherbondy was subsequently arrested by the Coquille Police Department for Theft I resulting from monies she had illegally taken from the Coquille High School Project Graduation program, and she was taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigations for the Wells Fargo Bank Robbery. Bank robbery carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
