What is going on with the fountain at the courthouse?
Mary Stewart

Several years ago there were trees in front of the courthouse around the fountain. Over the years the roots from the trees had pushed the concrete up, so they had the trees removed. Over the last two years since I have been a commissioner we have had several people who have tripped on the uneven concrete and the safety committee had reported the information to the Board of Commissioners. We originally had painted yellow caution lines around the area where the concrete was uneven or raised from the roots to alert pedestrians. Unfortunately that did not work or solve the problem as people continued to trip and/or fall.
One of the issues
that we have to look at is to ensure we reduce the risk of claims or suits filed against the county. We decided to remove all the old concrete and replace it to eliminate the hazard. The major discussion was to remove or leave the fountain. After receiving input for several months we opted to leave the fountain.

The fountain needed repair because of safety issues connected with uneven pavement surrounding it. While doing the repair to the pavement we found the fountain was not wired to code and were able to make these repairs at the same tome. I understand plans have been made to add a fountain in the small park by the clock as you enter Coquille. There is also a fountain in front of the museum. These water features add to the overall good impression of our city. Thank you for asking
