After all the National and State events, Coquille settled  down for a nice quiet local tournament to compete in  Saturday, May 30th. Five preschoolers and first graders participated,  some having to sit on their knees to see the board  but building up their skills in anticipation of maybe being a  future National team member.  In the 5th grade an under division, Emily Terry dominated  winning all her games. Fourth grader James Hopper's  only defeat was to Emily Terry.

The adults were integrated into the 12th grade and under  division. Third grader Josiah Perkins and fourth grader  Jace Sperling were "bumped" up into the older division due  to their past dominance in the younger division. Ninth  grader Jessi Ross continued to demonstrate her chess abilities  that she honed for Nationals by remaining undefeated  once again. Young Josiah Perkin's only defeat was to Jessi  and he won second place overall. The Coquille Chess Club is planning their fun summer  LaVerne Park Chess Tournaments where prizes are squirt  guns instead of trophies. Water fun is encouraged between  rounds. Tentative dates are June 27th, July 18th and August  1st. Some participants find camping the night before and  after adds to the enjoyment.
