Lincoln School third graders learn of the past at Coquille Valley Museum, May 6, 2009. Former teacher, administrator and museum board member George Johnson’s project is to have each child visit the museum before they reach eighth grade and visit again before High School graduation. We continue to get the most special and unusual things to put on display. Donna Parry brought in a Watchmakers Bench with a great many drawers for storing things. An electric motor had been rigged up to polish watch parts.
Ed used it for fly tying and the many drawers were filled with hooks, feathers and thread. We very recently discovered, in our back room, a very large aerial picture of Smith Wood Products in the 1920's. It was amazing to see the large number of buildings from the air. Ed Queen brought in his dad's high climbing gear; Kay Elliot, a collection, of many things. There were boxes of old valentines, letters with Post Office marks of nearly every post office in Oregon. Ed & Mary Hall brought
The blue bottles are marked poison. Dave Shaw and his wife, originally from Powers, brought in an Indian arrowhead collection that he found just south of Powers, some of the arrowheads are 3 to 5 thousand years old. A Banding Machine for china painting originally belonged to Katherine Ruble of Coquille, then to Pat Dalton of Roseburg, then she returned it to it's original home in Coquille. The Coquille Valley Museum will have a book signing day at the museum for Patti Strain and Boyd Stone’s new books which should be out shortly from the printer. We are planning a get together of students that went to Washington Grade School in Coquille.
We will meet before the Fireman's Steak Feed at Sturdivant Park from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Museum and then have a table at the Steak Feed to tell old stories. One of our most popular items at the Coquille Valley Museum is our Coquille High School Annuals. Everyone enjoys checking out their parents, school mates, and friends from the old days. We are missing the following years and hope the Sentinel readers can help us out - We are missing Annuals for the years, 1919, 1920, 1922, 1929, 1943, 1952, 1970, 1986 and the late years from 1991 to 2008. We would appreciate any old annuals that you might want to contribute to our collection. We continue to look for old photographs that we can copy and return the originals from where they came. We are always interested in things of interest to our visitors.
Fifty percent of our visitors are from out of town and we have some great historical books, t-shirts and DVD's for sale. We would be glad to give you a special tour and I'm sure that you will be pleasantly surprised with the interesting things we have on display. We are now open on Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. but starting Memorial Day we will be open 5 days a week, Tuesday thru Saturday. If you have any questions call 541-396-2773 or 541-824-0076.
