On April 30th, Judge Paula Bechtold continued a plea change hearing to May 14th for Wendi Boutiette, the former Coquille High School track coach accused of having sex with one of her athletes. Boutiette’s attorney, David Terry of Roseburg, said he provided the Douglas County District Attorney the results of his office’s investigation earlier this week. He requested the extension in coordination with the DA’s office so prosecutors could review his findings. Douglas County prosecutors are handling the case after Coos County District Attorney R. Paul Frasier recused his office over conflict- of-interest concerns. Coquille police, who arrested Boutiette on Feb. 14, said the case stems from an incident in 2006 involving a teenage boy who was on the Coquille High School track team. Boutiette’s attorney denies that his client has ever had physical contact with the former athlete.

Butler for Port of Bandon Commissioner

Bandon charter boat owner operator Wayne Butler is seeking a term as Port of Bandon Commissioner. According to Butler, he has spent nearly his entire life on the sea and in 1972 began working as a deck hand during summers on his father’s commercial salmon troller. Butler continued until he graduated from high school in 1978. “At that time it became a full time profession, where I participated in multiple fisheries, salmon, tuna, crabbing, and a couple of short stints on shrimp boats,” Butler said.

“I sold my commercial boat in 1990 and began a charter fishing business, and have continued this until today.” According to Butler, he is serving his tenth year on the Groundfish Advisory Panel for the Pacific Fisheries Management Council as the Oregon charter boat representative. However, he still has strong ties with the commercial industry and is active in that management process as well. Butler has served on the Oregon Sport Advisory Panel since it was formed. OSAP is a program set up by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and includes representatives from the entire Oregon coast in crafting fisheries management options with stake holder input. According to Butler, the program has been successful, and has contributed to better understanding and a partnership between the sport industry and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Currently serving his third term as the recreational advisor on the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, in 2008, Butler worked with the pacific states to craft the disaster relief criteria for the charter boat and booking offices in the state of Oregon. In addition, Butler serves on the board of directors of the Southern Oregon Ocean Source Committee, a group that was formed to facilitate dialog between fishermen and future industrial developers in the oceans off Oregon’s coast.

Franklin Smith Earns Rank of 1st Poom

On April 28th, Franklin Smith received his 1st Poom from Coquille Martial Arts, a rank that in Tae Kwon Do is also known as a junior black belt. Although eligible by age to test for his adult rank, Franklin chose to test for his Poom belt instead, to allow himself more time to mature, both physically and mentally. Far from being the end of his martial arts experience, however, black belt is actually the beginning. It’s a beginning that Smith, age 16, has been putting off for several months. “Finally,

I just told Franklin he was testing,” said Jim Saxton, head instructor at Coquille Martial Arts. As part of his testing, the teen led punches kicks and blocks through the white belt level and found himself teaching a new student under the watchful eyes of Jim and Karen Saxton. Before he earns his adult belt, he will experience more supervised teaching, and he will show that he knows the entire curriculum up to black belt level. In the meantime, this new rank allows him to learn new material while reviewing the old. Franklin, a home schooled high school student from Coquille, started classes with the Saxton’s instructors, the Wolfes. He took a break from martial arts for awhile and then returned when he was in middle school. Recently, asked what he likes most about the martial arts, Franklin answered in a very mature and thought out manner, “the ability to learn more about who one is, and how we react in different situations, and that everyone reacts differently, while attempting to achieve the same goal.

Also to learn personal security and how to protect oneself and others, while being able to inflict as little damage to one’s attacker/opponent, or in other words to resolve conflict without becoming part it.” For the instructors, watching students grow and gain confidence, as well as martial skill is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching martial arts. Although there is a baseline curriculum to be followed, there is no one size fits all in teaching martial arts. Each student will need to concentrate on different aspects of the art. For some, the tough part will be the technical aspects. For others it will be increasing their confidence. For others the conditioning. And for still others, it will be showing self discipline and controlling their actions.

Remembrance Service

On Sunday, May 24th at 11 a.m., Unity of Bandon will be holding a “Remembrance Service.“ This is time of remembering and honoring those we love who have passed on before us. Participants will have the opportunity to light a candle and speak the name and a blessing for loved ones, friends and pets that have passed on. Participants are also invited to bring a flower to add to the remembrance bouquets. This candle lighting service includes a special meditation of remembrance, followed by a heartwarming, life-affirming Sunday message. According to the Reverend Robin Haruna,

“This is one of the most touching and meaningful services you will ever attend.” Unity was founded in 1889 and welcomes all people. It is the home of a worldwide movement of prayer, education and publishing that helps people of all faiths apply positive spiritual principles in their daily lives. Unity publishes Daily Word, a monthly magazine of inspirational messages that is distributed to about one million people in 175 countries. All those on the South Coast are invited to participate. Unity of Bandon is located on Highway 101, one mile south of 11th Street.
