Title Wave Author Event

Title Wave Author Event
Linda Tamura Comes to Coquille and Bandon

Linda Tamura, author of the Hood River Issei: An Oral History of Japanese Settlers in Oregon’s Hood River Valley, gives free talks in Coquille and Bandon. Her program in Coquille takes place on Thursday, April 23, at 7:00 pm, in the Coquille City Council Chambers (at the new city hall, 851 N. Central Blvd.). She’ll present her program at the Bandon Public Library on Friday, April 24, at 7:00 pm.

Tamura’s program is about the these settlers in Hood River, and their experiences after Pearl Harbor and World War II, focusing on the young American citizens of Japanese heritage who served in the U.S. Army. While they fought battles overseas, their families were incarcerated in U.S. internment camps. Although they served the United States with great bravery and dedication, their communities discouraged them from returning home after the war, all because they were Japanese Americans.

Tamura’s book features interviews with the first generation Japanese, the Issei. Her book’s compelling look at the hardships, and triumphs, of the Issei, is based on interviews she did with the Issei of the Hood River Valley, who immigrated from Japan in the late 1800’s and the 1920’s. Tamura is a Professor of Education at Willamette University. Her program is the final event in this year’s Title Wave series of the libraries of Coos County. About Tamura’s books, historian Gordon B Dodds of Portland State University said “Without publication of this excellent work, a unique and significant dimension of the Japanese experience in the United State would have been forever lost.” Her program is a companion to the recent programs in Coos libraries that featured Mitzi Loftus and Joan Yasui Emerson, who spoke about the hardships endured by Japanese Americans who were forced into internment camps by the U.S. government soon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Tamura’s program is part of Oregon Reads 2009, which celebrates Oregon’s 150th birthday by getting communities across Oregon to read books by Oregon authors that focus on Oregon History. Title Wave is made possible by the Friends of the Library groups of Coos County, the Coos County Library Service District, and Books by the Bay.

On April 16th at approximately 5:19 p.m., Officers from the Coquille Police Department responded to the area of South Adams Street located off Highway 42, Coquille regarding a fight in progress.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a 51 year old male Coquille resident who had been assaulted by 19 year old Aaron Pfannenstiel and 15 year old, Eric Pinnell. Both Pfannenstiel and Pinnell are not residents of Coquille and were unknown to the victim. The investigation revealed that a 51 year old male and his wife were crossing Highway 41 near Adams Street in Coquille when Pfannenstiel and Pinnell who were driving on Highway 42 almost hit the 51 year old.

It was determined that Pinnell was driving the vehicle. After a gesture by the victim toward the driver of the vehicle, the victim and his wife continued walking onto Adams Street when Pfannenstiel and Pinnell drove up behind them. Both Pfannenstiel and Pinnell got out of the vehicle and began violently beating the victim to include telling him they were going to kill him. During the beating, the victim ended up falling down a 25 foot gully. The victim was transported to the Coquille Valley Hospital via ambulance.

The victim was admitted to the hospital with at least one broken leg, numerous cuts and lacerations. Both Pfannenstiel and Pinnell were charged with Felony Assault II, Reckless Endangerment, and Resisting Arrest. Pfannenstiel and Pinnell demonstrated no cooperation in the investigation to include assaulting a Coquille Police Officer and resisting arrest. Special thanks for those who stopped to render aid to the victim and the Coos County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance with this investigation. Anyone with any additional information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Coquille Police Department at (541) 396- 2114.

“The Lord opened her Pastor - Carl Kelley heart to give heed to what was said by Paul.” Her name, of course, was Lydia, a woman from the city of Thyatira in western Asia Minor, but was in Philippi when Paul first preached there (Acts 16:11-15).

Lydia was a business woman, a seller of purple-dyed goods produced in her hometown. When we come upon the this scene, Paul and Barnabas were on their second missionary journey. Philippe was a prominent Greek city of Macedonia. It was named for the father of Alexander The Great - - Philip of Macedon. The city had received praise from the Roman government because its citizens has captured and held the assassins of Julius Caesar.

Commerce was bustling in Philippi, thus Lydia has brought her wares there and was available when the evangelists went out to the side of the river to preach Christ. Lydia “was a worshiper of God,” that is one who was drawn to the Jewish community, but not a convert. Lydia gave “heed to what was said by Paul” and the dramatic result was that she, “with her household,” was immersed into Christ. Obviously it was convenient for these immersions to happen there, as the river was nearby. What a day! A whole family! Well, over one’s lifetime, one might witness such an event several times, that is, an entire family turning to Christ, being immersed in water, rising to “walk in newness of life” (Rom. 6:4).

In fact, we in churches of Christ keep trying to duplicate that ancient scene, hoping to see families “give heed to what was said by Paul.” but, truth is, it usually happens one believer at a time. Praise God when it happens! How is it with you? Or with you and your family? We urge you to give heed. We’ve been your neighbors in Coquille for over fifty years. Coquille Church of Christ 2nd & Gould (541) 396-2508

Don’t Lump Us All Together

So, I have read in our local paper over the past couple of weeks about how some folks are laying upon the garbage of their ranting and failures of a few who call themselves Christians upon all of us who are Believers in Christ. Please don’t lump us all together.

There are many, many Believers in Jesus Christ that do not follow the extremes, on either side, and do make every effort to follow the teachings and commandments of the Lord with all of their heart. Does that mean we are perfect; not in the slightest, nor will we ever be in this life. However, that doesn’t mean we all join in with the likes of those who make statements that are not Biblical and judgmental against others. Jesus clearly states for us to not throw the first stone; for we are all sinners, there are none just, not one. There are many of us believers who love the Lord Jesus Christ and attempt to love as others as He loves us.

You will find this in John 13:34-35. My recommendation is first to all who call upon Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord to follow His commandments so that others will know that we are truly His disciples. My second recommendation is to all who are watching our lives who proclaim themselves as believer to understand that we are really no different than any other person; not better nor worse; we are parents, husbands, wives, children, relatives and neighbors. To fall into the trap of lumping all believers into one lump is like any other prejudice act; of judging a book by its cover. Most caring and loving people would not make such judgments because of the culture or color of skin; please don’t do it because of people’s faith either.

God Bless You. First Assembly of God 45 E. 2nd St., Coquille

Saturday April 25th is International Tai Chi and Qi Gung day which will be celebrated all around the world at 10am local time.

The words Tai Chi translate into “the ultimate.” In many ways, Tai Chi is the ultimate martial art. At the height of its development in the 1600’s it was a fast martial art, much like kung fu is today. The slow movements we know today were merely part of the training, and when the Manchurian emperor demanded that the Tai Chi masters share their art with him for its strength and vitality, they taught him only the slow forms. Tai Chi is considered a soft style art using internal rather external power.

Today many people practice Tai Chi for its health benefits alone, gaining better balance, better flexibility, stronger joints, decreased pain and for its gentle aerobic benefits. Still others compete in forms and push hands competitions, and still others learn Tai Chi as a form of defense. Tai Chi also teaches traditional Chinese weapons, including broad sword, long sword and spear.

Qi Gung or Chi Gung, is a set of breathing and movement exercises that benefit the body in much the same way Tai Chi does. The Shaolin monks use aspects of Qi Gung to strengthen theirs bodies against both weapons and hand to hand attacks. On Saturday, April 25th, Coquille Martial Arts will join with Tai Chi practitioners( known as players) all over the world by devoting an hour to Tai Chi and Qi Gung. The public is invited to join them for a celebration of these two arts. There is no charge for participating or watching, and for anyone who would like to try a free class before Saturday, a basic primer will be offered Friday April 24th at 5:30 at the studio at 44 W 1st St.

We will meet at the studio at 10 am Saturday morning and if the weather is warm enough to be enjoyable, we will walk down to the park behind the community building for an hour of tai chi and qi gung. Coquille Martial Arts does the Yang long form. In China the form is learned by simply following along with those who already know the form, so if you are interested in giving it a try, feel free. If you find you’d rather learn the form step by step, then try one of the beginner tai chi classes offered by Coquille Martial Arts. Following the Tai Chi celebration will be a class in arnise style stick defense for the regular students of Coquille Martial Arts. This is a great time to come watch and ask questions about the benefits of martial arts for children, adults and seniors.
