			<title><![CDATA[Americanism Essay Contest Winners]]></title>

			<description><![CDATA[<img title="" alt="" src="http://www.oregonbeacon.com/CoquilleSentinel/content_images/2/april15/Amreicanism-Presentation-012.jpg" vspace="10" width="500" align="baseline" border="0" height="375" hspace="10"/><br/>Americanism Essay Contest Awards were recently presented to the winners at<br/>the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge meeting. Chairman Pete Pedersen gave out<br/>Certificates of Participation, trophies and savings bonds to the students from<br/>Coquille Valley Middle School and Myrtle Point Middle School.<br/>The Americanism Essay Contest is an annual program sponsored by Elks<br/>Lodges nation wide for 5th/6th graders and 7th/8th graders. This year’s theme<br/>was “What It Means To Me To Be an American.”<br/>Third place winner this year, receiving a certificate and trophy will be go to<br/>McKenzie Church, of Coquille Valley Middle School. McKenzie, who was<br/>unable to be there is the daughter of Steve and Kelly Church.<br/>Second place went to Cody Underwood, Coquille Valley Middle School, son of<br/>Sherry Underwood. Cody received a certificate and trophy.<br/>First place was won by Scarlet Celestino of Myrtle Point Middle School. Scarlet<br/>received a certificate, trophy and $50 savings bond from the local contest and<br/>then her essay was sent on to district where she also took first place and<br/>received a $100 savings bond.<br/>We congratulate all of the students who participated and the teachers who<br/>allowed them to write the essays.<br/>]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[Coquille Lions Club buys new sound system]]></title>

			<description><![CDATA[<img title="" alt="" src="http://www.oregonbeacon.com/CoquilleSentinel/content_images/2/april15/cutis.jpg" vspace="10" width="500" align="baseline" border="0" height="333" hspace="10"/><br/>Coquille High School’s Spike Leslie Field received a much needed new sound<br/>system thanks to the generosity of the Coquille Lion’s Club. Both the high<br/>school and the middle school will be able to use the system during their<br/>events. The Lions Club president, Curtis Jack, presented athletic director, Dan<br/>Cumberland, with a check during the recent twilight track meet. The amount of<br/>the donation is $3,379.29. Much of the funds came from Lion Burger sales at<br/>the Coos County Fair. Curtis said this project was one way to help the community<br/>that supports them. In addition, the club helps with eyeglasses and<br/>hearing aids. Anyone interested in finding out more about the Coquille Lions<br/>Club is invited to drop by their monthly meetings on the second Monday of<br/>every month at Mr. Zack’s at 6 p.m.<br/>]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[Roman “Ray” E. Chmiel March 17, 1915 – April 9, 2009]]></title>

			<description><![CDATA[A private graveside service  will be held for Roman  “Ray” E. Chmiel, 94, of  Cottage Grove, formerly of  Coquille, at the Coquille  Pioneer Cemetery.<br/><br/>Ray passed away April 9,  2009 at Sacred Heart  Hospital in Eugene, OR. He  had been living with his son  Douglas in Cottage Grove,  OR. Ray was born to  Stanley and Jennetta  (Zabarowski) Chmiel on  March 17, 1915 in Chicago,  IL. He graduated from  Ewing High School, Ewing,  NE in 1932.  Ray was to have gone into  combat during WW2 in  1942 when an officer spotted  him working at a typewriter.  He was reassigned to  the Signal Corps, Medical  Corps, and Battalion  Headquarters where he  worked as a personnel clerk  processing service records  and payroll for the troops.  He spent much of his tour of  duty in the South Pacific  until being discharged from  the Army in August 1945.<br/><br/>Ray married Virginia  (Page) Heintzelman on  January 14, 1955 in Carson  City, NV. Ray became an  instant father to Virginia’s  three children by her first  marriage, and he and  Virginia had one son,  Douglas Wayne. After his  retirement he and Virginia  bought a pickup with a  camper on the back and  traveled to all the states in  the United States, Canada,  and Alaska. They also traveled  to Hawaii, New  Zealand, Fiji Islands, and  Australia where they saw  Pope John Paul in person.  Ray enjoyed traveling, fishing,  clam digging, crabbing,  playing cards, dice, golfing,  beach-combing, and teasing  everyone he knew.<br/><br/>He was a  member of American  Legion Post No. 0036, the  Elks Club, and the Royal  Neighbors.  Ray is survived by his son  Douglas (Linda) Chmiel of  Cottage Grove, his three  stepchildren, Sharol (Larry)  Molland of Mondovi, WI,  Verna Sue (Jerry)  Kirkpatrick of Myrtle Point,  and John (Melinda)  Heintzelman of Janesville,  WI., nine grandchildren, 10  great grandchildren, and 4  great-great grandchildren.  He is also survived by a  brother Alexander (Betty)  Chmiel of O’Neil, NE., and  two sisters Hattie (James)  Feeney of CO and Felicia  (Leland) Horn of Grand  Island, NE.  He was preceded in death  by his wife Virginia in Nov.,  2003, his parents, an infant  sister Cecelia, and by brothers  Eugene and Carl.  Arrangements are under  the direction of Myrtle  Grove Funeral Service, 396-  3158.<br/>]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[Lt. Com. Ret. USN Norman Bruce Chezem, Sr.]]></title>

			<description><![CDATA[Dec. 10, 1930 to April 7, 2009<br/>Norm was born 10 miles  south of Bandon in a small  cabin on 40 acres of land  that his parents owned.  He attended Myrtle Point  and Fairview Elementary  schools, Coquille High  School for 3 years, graduating  from Marshfield High in  1948.  Norm enlisted in the Navy  and made it his first career.  After 22 years and retirement,  he worked for  Burroughs Office Equiment,  Computer Division. He sold  a computer to one of the  telephone companies in San  Francisco, maintaining it  until his second retirement.  He married Vera Mae  Macks in Pensicola, Florida.  They had three children,  Fonda Kay, Cindy Lorane  and Norman Bruce, Jr. who  all survive him. He is also  survived by five grandaughters,  two grandsons, 4 greatgrandaughters  and many  nieces and nephews, and a  sister, Phyllis M. Crothers,  of Albany, OR.  He was preceded in death  by a brother, Wayne A.  Chezem and his parents,  Lyman & Helen Chezem.<br/>]]></description>

			<title><![CDATA[SHERIIFF’’S DEPARTMENT]]></title>

			<description><![CDATA[<span style="font-weight: bold;">Kuehn Sentenced to 13 Yrs for Child Pornography</span><br/>On April 7th, after almost 7  months of investigation,  Gary Herman Kuehn, 56, of  Coos Bay, was sentenced on  three charges relating to a  Child Pornography relating  to an investigation that  began on Kuehn Road in  Coos Bay in October of  2008.<br/><br/>In the Coos County Circuit  Court for the State of  Oregon Mr. Kuehn pled  guilty to 2 counts of Using a  Child in Display of Sexually  Explicit Conduct and 1  count of Sex Abuse II. The  Using a Child in Display of  Sexually Explicit Conduct  counts were Measure 11  crimes with a mandatory  minimum of 70 months per  count. Mr. Kuehn was sentenced  to 165 months or 13  3/4 years to the Oregon  Department of Corrections.  The charges relate to Mr.  Keuhn having video taped  16 and 17 year old children  in a variety of sexually  explicit situations. In  October of 2008, officers  from the Coos County  Major Crime Team and the  Eugene FBI executed a  search warrant at Mr.  Kuehn’s residence in Coos  Bay and seized hundreds of  videos and pictures depicting  children in display of  sexually explicit conduct.<br/><br/><span style="font-weight: bold;">Multiple Citations Issued in Bryant Case</span><br/>According to Chief  Rodger Craddock of the  Coos Bay Police  Department Tammy Bryant  was issued a citation in lieu  of custody for Furnishing  Alcohol to a Minor during  the March 19, 2009 incident  in which her husband,  Coquille Police Officer  James Bryant, was arrested  following a citizen complaint  alleging that he had  provided alcohol to one  minor and solicited another  minor to engage in a sexual  act sometime between  Tuesday, March 17th, and  the early morning hours of  Wednesday, March 18th  while at a home on  Woodland Drive in Coos  Bay.  Chief Craddock also  informed the Sentinel that  Michael & Cynthia Wallace,  who reside at the Woodland  Drive address where the  alleged incident took place  were also issued Citations  for Furnishing Alcohol to a  Minor, which is a Class A  Misdemeanor.  On March 31, 2009 James  Bryant resigned from his  position as a Coquille Police  Officer and subsequently  left the area.<br/><br/><span style="font-weight: bold;">Ledesma-Laguna arrested for Rape</span><br/>On April 9, 2009 at  approximately 1011 hours,  officers from the Coquille  Police Department responded  to 1201 Shelley Road for  a report of a possible  domestic violence/assault  case.<br/><img title="" alt="" src="http://www.oregonbeacon.com/CoquilleSentinel/content_images/2/april15/200904010_rape_suspect.jpg" vspace="10" width="212" align="baseline" border="0" height="230" hspace="10"/><br/>Upon arrival, officers  learned that the 23 year old  female resident had been  assaulted and raped. As a  result of the investigation,  Coquille Officers assisted  by the Coos Bay Police  Department located Juan  Ledesma-Laguna, a 33 year  old Coos Bay resident. Mr.  Ledesma-Laguna was taken  in for questioning and subsequently  arrested on the  following charges: Rape I,  Assault IV, Strangulation  and Interfering with making  a 911 call.  Mr. Ledesma-Laguna was  transported to the Coos  County Correctional facility  and booked on the above  charges.  If anyone has any further  information regarding this  investigation, they are  encouraged to contact the  Coquille Police Department,  (541) 396-2114.<br/><br/><span style="font-weight: bold;">Stringer Arrested for Assault</span><br/>On April 12th at 9:59 m.,  Sheriff’s Deputies responded  to a residence on  Cammann Road in Coos  Bay regarding the report of  a domestic disturbance in  progress at that location.  Upon arrival the deputies  investigation indicated that  John Stringer, 29 of Coos  Bay, had physically assaulted  his live-in girlfriend  Stefanie Soyck, 25 of Coos  Bay, during an argument  between the two.  John Stringer was arrested  by the deputies and taken  into custody and transported  to the Coos County Jail  without incident where he  was lodged and charged  with Harassment  (Domestic), with $7500  SRA.<br/><br/><span style="font-weight: bold;">Accident on Highway 42</span><br/>On April 7th at 10:45 a.m.  Wendy L. Hood, 23 of  Myrtle Point, was traveling  westbound on Highway 42  near milepost 16.5 when the  vehicle she was operating  went off the highway crashing  into an ODOT reflector  and into a ditch. Hood  apparently overcorrected her  steering which caused the  vehicle to cross over the  westbound and eastbound  lanes of traffic an crashing it  into an ODOT guardrail.  The operator of the vehicle  was transported to Coquille  Valley Hospital. The vehicle  was towed by Clyde from  Glyde Towing. No citations  were issued.<br/><br/><span style="font-weight: bold;">Coquille Man Arrested</span><br/>Coquille police arrested a  Coquille man Thursday on a  domestic harassment charge.  Officers responded to the  River’s Edge RV Park, 47 S.  Cedar St., after getting a  report of a possible fight.  They arrested James  Cunningham, 48, the charge.  He was taken to Coos  County jail, where he was  being held on $7,500 bail.<br/>]]></description>
