Long-term Healthcare Choices that Offer a Longer and Better Quality Life

By Abundant Living - Senior Care Home

What happens when you no longer feel safe living at home alone? Or you’re no longer able to take care of an elderly family member. Often times, when a longterm illness arises, or becomes worse, families are burdened with the heavy responsibility of finding a new living arrangement for themselves, or their loved ones. In the past, the only options available were found in the commercial settings of a Nursing Home or Assisted Living facility. But times have changed, and now thanks to the pace setting example the state of Oregon has set forth for the rest of the nation, we have an alternative. Once known as the “Adopt a Grandparent” program for the elderly and disabled, it is now recognized as the Private Senior Care Home or Adult Foster Home. These homes have popped up all over Coos County, totaling over thirty to date.

What’s the difference between an Adult Foster Home and a commercially run facility? In two words…A lot! But first, let’s look at the similarities. 1. Both the commercially run Nursing Home and the Adult Foster Home are licensed by the state after fulfilling the mandated requirements. 2. Each of them offer care for all stages of health, ranging from assisted living to intensive healthcare. 3. Both places offer activities, prepare your meals, do your laundry, administer your prescriptions, set your doctor appointments and schedule your transportation to and fro in addition to any other care needs you may require. So you may ask, what could possibly be so different between the two? Here are the differences…

1. Individualized Care that may help you live longer! A family owned Adult Foster Home cares for no more than five clients at a time, resulting in caregiver to patient ratios of often times 2 to 5 and sometimes 3 to 5. This is without a doubt one of the greatest benefits. A study done by the state has recently declared that the longevity of life for someone living in an Adult Foster Home is often times much longer than one lived in a commercial nursing home. This kind of individualized, one on one care is unsurpassed by the commercially run facilities, where they often times won’t exceed more than one caregiver per 15-30 clients.

2. Environment. Sometimes commercial facilities can feel a little, well…commercial. If you’re looking for something a little more inviting that reminds you more of home…look no further. The Adult Foster Home is where it’s at. The smell of cookies fresh out of the oven, a kitty cat purring on your lap, the warm, soft crackle of the fire on a cold winters day…these are some of the things you will experience at an Adult Foster Home. Why? Because this is a home where people live. A place they may see children playing in the yard. A place where your pet may be able to call home, as pets are almost always part of the lively atmosphere. This is not a place for you to be tucked away to patiently wait for the fateful day that the grim reaper comes knocking on your door. This is a place for you to LIVE. To experience love and joy and the true sense of family.

3. Cost. Let’s face it. The cost of our long-term care is very important to us, especially in these troubled economic times. You may be thinking that with all the benefits an Adult Foster Home offers, it would cost more than a commercially run facility. But in actuality, it almost always costs less. Sometimes up to 50% less! One of the reasons being that a family-run Adult Foster Home has much lower overhead, enabling them to pass the savings onto you.

4. Location. You don’t have to move to Coos Bay or North Bend to receive good care. If you are one of the many residents of the beautiful towns of Coquille, Myrtle Point or Bandon, you no longer have to leave your hometown to find good care in a home-like environment. You may even be able to stay in your own neighborhood, attend your church, visit your neighbors and still live with your faithful pet right by your side! If you’re interested in learning what Adult Foster Homes are available in your community, just contact the Department of Human Services at 756-2017. They will send you a list of Adult Foster Homes in your area that you can call to schedule a tour, as each one is very different. You can also ask for a free long-term care assessment for yourself or your loved one, that will help you become more aware of what your options are.

The Christ Lutheran Church, 1835 N. 15th St., in Coos Bay, will begin its observance of the Lenten season with an Ash Wednesday Service Wednesday, February 25th at 6:30 p.m. The service will follow the congregation’s “soup supper” at 6 p.m. Lent is the 40-day traditional time of spiritual preparation for Jesus’ death and resurrection. Christ Lutheran has a rather informal observance of Lent with the emphasis on fellowship, praise, and additional instruction from God’s Word.

This Lent the services will include messages based on the “Seven Last Sentences of Jesus from the Cross”. All are welcome to attend the “soup supper” and the informal Lenten service.
