A Meditation On Proverbs 23:29-31

“Who hath woe? who
hath sorrow? who hath
contentions? who hath babbling?
who hath wounds
without cause? who hath
redness of eyes? They that
tarry long at the wine; they
that go to seek mixed wine.
Look not thou upon the
wine when it is red, when it
giveth his colour in the cup,
when it moveth itself
aright”

It is amazing how many problems that our world faces and many of those problems are contributed to by drinking. Alcohol is the number one drug problem in America. I went the computer and searched alcohol statistics and found out, 50% of driving fatalities involve alcohol, one death every 30 minutes in the United States. 40% of industrial fatalities and 47% of industrial injuries are linked to alcohol.

Nearly one in 4 Americans admitted to general hospitals have alcohol problems, four in ten criminal offenders report alcohol as a factor, three out of four spouse violence victims report alcohol was involved, and I am not even, for sake of space, going to list the percentages of rapes, suicide, drownings, health, child abuse, etc. Yet we have Christians that try and justify their drinking in saying that the Bible does not teach abstinence. Here, God says, Don’t even look on it. Proverbs 20:1, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” Christians are supposed to be wise.

I can give you several, Biblical reasons not to drink. Romans 14:13, “Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumbling block or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.” I Thessalonians 5:22, “Abstain from all appearance of Evil.” Philippians 2:15, “That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;” If you do not know Christ and are struggling from the effects of alcohol, either as the abuser or the victim, I John 5:4&5,

“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God.?” I would like to encourage you to come to Christ. He loves you and wants to give you victory over sin, the flesh, the devil, and this world, that is why He took our sins and nailed them to the cross. Please join us this Sunday as we meet together to worship Jesus.

Pastor Bruce Perkins, Bible Baptist Church N. Dean St., Coquille 396-5613

“Damascus Road”

Waterloo. Pearl Harbor.

Such places and events provoke near-instant recognition in those who hear or read them; so too, do the words “Damascus Road”. “The Damascus Road Experience” refers to a dramatic encounter with a “moment of truth,” more often to an encounter with God! That was the experience of Saul, a young man from Tarsus who was a rising star in Jewish legal circles following the establishment of Christ’s church) and the rapid spread of the Gospel of Christ after the stoning of Stephen (Acts 7). It was outside of Damascus, Syria, the world’s oldest city, that the risen Lord, Jesus Christ, confronted Saul (see Acts 9:1-9). Saul was carrying arrest warrants for those, both men and women, who belonged to “the Way.” (note: the vague reference to early Christians - “the way.”) Heaven’s light beamed brightly and Saul was blinded by it. He did, of course, hear a voice that he did not recognize (Acts 9:2- 6).

Christ identified himself and instructed Saul, who was temporarily blinded by his experience there in the road, to go into Damascus and wait for further directions. Sauls’ fellow travelers were confused, as he was. So also were the disciples of Christ inside Damascus (Acts 9:7-19). In fact, the particular disciple (Ananias, v.10 who was told to find Saul in the city and help him further his obedience to Christ, actually argued with the Lord, referring to Saul’s reputation as a persecutor of Christians. Ananias lost the argument, of course (see Acts 9:13-16). The result of all these encounters and conversations was that Saul would himself become a disciple of Jesus Christ. Acts 9:18 tells us Saul was baptized into Christ and he received his sight.

And the world would never be the same as it had been before Saul’s conversion. God had in mind a great plan that would include Saul of Tarsus. In time, Saul would be known as Paul–The Apostle Paul! No disciple of Jesus Christ had the impact on history Paul did, and continues to have. It’s just an amazing story. Through the evangelistic ministry of Paul, God advanced the borders of His reign all the way to Europe. Paul preached to Jews and non-Jews alike, and would eventually be known as the apostle to the Gentiles (non- Jews). (One might also read Galatians 2:1-10 and Acts 15:1-41.) Paul would eventually write 13 of the 27 books of our New Testament, and his tireless efforts (like the tireless efforts by Saul to persecute Christians), would bring unknown numbers of people to Jesus Christ.

Isn’t it amazing to see God work to convert a foe like Saul into an Apostle Extraordinaire? What power! What resolve! We in churches of Christ, teach regularly on these matters. When God speaks to us through Paul, or any of those He inspired to write scripture, we want to be very attentive. Don’t you? We work hard to help folks have their very own encounter with God through his Word, their very own Damascus Road experience. Have you had yours? We can help. We’ve been your neighbors in Coquille for more than fifty years.

Coquille Church of Christ 2nd & Gould (541) 396-2508

Reflective Living in Everyday Life

By Ken Duke
So often we get use to attending church, singing songs of praise and hearing the preacher preach his message and go about our daily lives the remainder of the week and not see God at work in our everyday lives. He is at work; at work in every situation and in every life that we encounter. His voice can be heard by those who desire to listen if we would us just take a moment and listen.

However, many of us are so busy with what is before us; we don’t take that time, that small little moment and pause to hear the voice of the Lord speaking into our hearts and souls providing His wisdom and guidance. This is why “Reflective Living” is so key to successful Christian living. “Be Still and Know that I Am God.”, the Scriptures tell us. The Lord desires for us to slow down and even pause to hear His perspective; His wisdom; His truth in our circumstances. Reflective living is seeing the Lord at work in our day to day affairs; our day to day relationships. When we slow down we have the joy of enjoying life and all that it brings to us. So may we all become reflective unto the voice of the Lord and follow His leading for our lives.

First Assembly of God 457 E. 2nd St., Coquille 396-4205
