Good Tidings of Great Joy

James Salisbury,
Associate Pastor

The Christmas season has begun. I am hopeful everyone made it through the after Thanksgiving 5am only sales. I myself enlisted a fearless friend to do battle for the two items I could not do without. Whether we need to jump right from Thanksgiving to Christmas can be debated, but that said, bring on Christmas time.

I enjoy the lights, the gift giving, and the eggnog. Yes I can do without the commercial exploitation, the battles over nativity scenes in the public squares, and
those that hate Jesus so much that they use X-mas in place of Christmas.

However, I still love Christmas time. Christmas is the time of the year we celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ. It does not matter if December 25th is Jesus’ real birthday or not, because the birth of Jesus is worth celebrating every day of the year, for it is the day God became flash and dwelt among us. Over 2000 years ago there was much celebrating as an angel proclaimed “... behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” We celebrate the birth of a Saviour, Jesus Christ, who came into the world to save sinners.

The Word of God says “for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Let’s take time (lots of time) this Christmas season to give God the praise and glory for sending Jesus, a Saviour. It is up to you, you can choose to make Christmas about Jesus, or not.

Please come and worship Jesus Christ, the Saviour, with us at Bible Baptist Church, of Coquille.
James Salisbury, Associate Pastor

Bible Baptist Church
N.
The Miracle of Jesus

The healing of the lame man at the Beautiful gate (Acts 3:1-10) draws Peter and John deeper into their apostolic ministry. And again it’s Peter who is the
spokesman (see Acts 3:11- 26). His speech is not worlds different from his sermon on Pentecost in Acts 2. Peter addresses the surprise of those who observed the miraculous healing. He again gives the glory to God and briefly reviews the history of God’s plan of redemption. The “God of our fathers” had sent his servant Jesus, who was rejected by members of Peter’s audience.

They had tried to trade the life of Jesus for the life of a common criminal, and killed “the Author of Life.” But God raised Jesus from the dead and it is “by
faith in his name” that the lame man was healed. A bitter story and one that would be repeated over and over again as the New Testament story unfolds. (We are reminded of John 1:11, where it says Christ came to his own and his own did not receive him.) But there is hope. Peter tells his listeners that they should not despair. Indeed, they should repent, “turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,” no doubt reminding some in his audience of what Peter had said on Pentecost (see Acts 2:38). The apostle also gives his hearers a brief scripture lesson (see Acts. 3:21-26), to show that what they were witnessing that day had been foretold by God’s servants hundreds of years before.

Very enlightening. Don’t you think? It’s just lovely how the apostles carried on the work begun by Jesus, spreading the word and encouraging folks to turn to God and be cleansed from their sins. Peter is careful to remind his listeners that all glory belongs to God. Preaching and working miracles in those early days were all done by the Spirit’s guidance. There’s a hymn that says “What ere we do in work or deed, do all in the name of the Lord.” We try to follow that. And you? We’ve been your neighbors in Coquille for over 50 years.

Coquille Church of Christ
2nd & Gould
(541) 396-2508
