Congratulations Class of 2008!

With graduation looming just around the corner, (twelve
weeks and counting) the seniors can say goodbye to their
senior year and hello to their future life. I began to wonder
how many seniors actually had plans for when they leave
Coquille High School. Then I wondered if the next year's
seniors, or shall I say class of 2009, have figured out what
they want for their future as well. How soon are high school
students beginning to figure out what they want in life? I
conducted a study of seventy five students of the senior
class. Out of the whole ninety three students, eighteen seniors
were not surveyed due to absences and online classes.
The conclusion that I have come to is that most of the seniors
have an idea of what their future holds, or at least what
they want it to hold. Now all they can do is leave their fate
to the administrators at universities or community colleges
to decide their future. More than half the senior class plans
to attend college. Only one student is undecided. The others
plan to join the armed forces, trading schools, or get a job.
The senior class will be remembered long after they graduate.

For parents burdened by a divorce or a heavy workload, it is becoming increasingly difficult to stay in touch with their children and each other. Visitation rights might decree that a parent only gets to see a child every other weekend, or perhaps the parent returns home from the office so late each night that their kids are already asleep. Additionally, children themselves are becoming busier and busier – extra academic studies after school, practice with the sports team – which further reduces the contact between parent and child. Whatever the reasons, a communication chasm is appearing between many parents and their children.

Americans need look no farther than the reauthorization of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to understand why fundamental change is needed in Washington. The good intentions of American taxpayers extending a helping hand to Africans ravaged by AIDS are caught between Republican ideologues and complicit Democrats avoiding a fight on issues at the center of efforts to combat AIDS; sexual and reproductive health.

I've been traveling all across the country over the last two years and have met countless risk-takers with brilliant business ideas and big dreams. Sadly, many of them don't venture out in pursuit of those dreams because they're concerned about becoming another faceless name on Americas uninsured rolls. That's because their employer owns their health-insurance policy, and there's no guarantee that they'll be able to get affordable coverage if they leave their current job.
