Where did the name Oregon originate? What was the Roseburg Blast of 1959? How did the Pendleton Roundup get started? What little publicized, but notorious deed took place in Christmas Valley in the 1960s?
For the first time, people interested in finding out answers to these questions, and to thousands of others like them, will have a single authoritative place to look. The Oregon Historical Society and Portland State University invite the public to “open their minds to Oregon” and participate in the creation of The Oregon Encyclopedia, a new online resource where information on the state's significant people, places, events, institutions, and biota will be available to anyone with access to the World Wide Web at www.oregonencyclopedia.org.

Coquille Hich School 3A Team Chess Champions

It was fun and games Feb. 22 and 23 as Coquille participated in the Oregon High School
Chess Team State Championships in Roseburg. However, the Coquille Varsity and Junior
Varsity chess teams were dead serious in their games and their goal of becoming 3A State
Champions during this two day event as they competed amidst 40 school teams. Smiles and
calm celebrations broke their serious chess facades as they realized they both earned State
Champions in their divisions as their final games finished with victories.
The Coquille Varsity Chess Team in the final round were teamed up
with Creswell High School (who earned second place). Fifth board senior
Cody Ericson finished his game first with a disappointing loss. A
glance at other boards showed some of the others were fighting disadvantages but through
perseverance and diligence, the remaining players worked out strategies to get ahead.
Sophomore Justin Thomas on fourth board had lost his queen early but managed to catch
up. With a two pawn advantage in the end game, he was able to promote a pawn and
replace his queen for a quick victory. Senior James Baldridge on third board was able to
keep things even till a decisive win in the end. Then Freshman Stephen Mast on second
board was able to claim a victory. Freshman Seth Perkins on first board no longer felt pressured
but was determined to win his game anyway. After a two hour game he finally wore
out his opponents defenses to win his game and give the final tally of 4-1in the final round.
